Silk Painting

Painting on silk started in China over 2000 years ago and is still very popular although in today's world, in general, natural silk is used with various modern sizing methods for more detailed work.

Personally, I like the traditional Chinese sizing method which (with one small change) can be easily removed and the picture is then just as vibrant on both sides of the silk; this is particularly useful when painting scarves as the detail shows on both sides. There are many different weights and types of silk, I favour Habotai 10, satins and silk cotton.

Included here are pieces painted in China's traditional style on  sized silk with some silk velvet and trapunto work. Embellishing and embroidery work on silk give extra depth and interest and these pieces can be used as handbags, cushion covers and soft furnishings as well as pictures.
